Accessibility Statement
Last updated: 2026-05-28
Our commitment
Solar Archive (operated by Chris Gilly) is committed to ensuring Solar Archive is accessible to as many people as possible, including people who use assistive technologies. We aim for conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
This statement is published in connection with our obligations under the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882), which came into force on 28 June 2025.
Conformance status
The site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The known non-conformances are listed below; we are actively closing them.
What works
- Keyboard navigation through all primary workflows (product picker → image picker → editor) without a mouse
- Visible focus indicators on interactive elements (commit 0a98244 introduced a global focus-visible ring)
- Color contrast ≥ 4.5:1 for body text and ≥ 3:1 for non-text UI in the default dark theme
- Proper landmark structure (
<main>,<nav>,<footer>) - Step badges and section headings convey the user's position in the workflow
- Modals trap focus and close on Escape
prefers-reduced-motionrespected: radial wipes, fades, and scroll animations short-circuit when the OS preference is set- Solar-image content carries descriptive
altattributes - Cookie banner does not block content and can be operated by keyboard
Known gaps
- Some form controls (
<input type="date">, master toggle radio buttons inside the variant modal) rely on visible-text labels rather than programmatic<label>association — being addressed in the current sprint. - The radial-wipe animation on the master toggle can be visually intense; it is short-circuited under
prefers-reduced-motionbut a hard-stop “disable all motion” toggle is on the roadmap. - The product-mockup canvas does not currently announce its content to screen readers. We surface the product name in a centred heading above the canvas as a workaround.
- The custom HEK event-picker tiles have basic ARIA labelling but the keyboard focus order across the 4-tile grid is left-to-right + top-to-bottom only (no arrow-key navigation).
Preparation of this statement
This statement was prepared on 2026-05-28. The audit was self-assessment using automated tooling (Lighthouse, axe-core) and manual keyboard + screen-reader walk-throughs (VoiceOver on macOS, NVDA on Windows). A third-party audit is planned for Q1 2027.
